Create Cambodia

Create Cambodia Youth Arts Festival

What? The Create Cambodia Youth Arts Festival is an event for Cambodian 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade students, run by Peace Corps volunteers. This year will be our 6th annual Create Cambodia event. We aim to have participants from each province participate. The Create Cambodia Youth Arts Festival provides students with formal art education and an opportunity to showcase their talents via exhibition or performance, and allows counterparts hands-on experience working with students and arts organizations. The Create Cambodia programming is geared for students interested in the arts—visual art, drama, dance, music, and creative writing. Create Cambodia is also partnered with Art Olympics to present art club artwork.

How? Participating schools will develop arts-based clubs early in the school year, for which volunteers will encourage students to explore visual art, drama, dance, music, and/or creative writing. Students should work toward a final project or performance to showcase at the Create Cambodia Youth Arts Festival. Arts-club materials, such as lesson plan and learning resources, community fundraiser event planning tools, and more, will be provided to participating volunteers via Art Olympics. During the festival students will participate in arts workshops and activities, meet Cambodian youth of similar interests, view professional arts performances, showcase artwork, and more!

Where? Create Cambodia Arts Festival will takes place at the Khmer Arts venue near Phnom Penh. Volunteer led arts-clubs take place at individual sites, with schools, orphanages, community groups, etc.

When? The Create Cambodia Festival’s suggested timeline: October-November: Initiate Arts Club Meetings and develop membership, we will distribute the Create Cambodia manual at this time for ideas! December: Brainstorm performance/project ideas January/February: Begin planning performance/project for the festival in May.

Why? The Create Cambodia Youth Arts Festival is a great opportunity for students to gain experience performing and presenting personal artwork, to meet other students with similar interests, and to participate in professional arts-related workshops. Also, Khmer counterparts have an opportunity to work an educational arts-event and gain first-hand instructional experience in the arts.
